Consultant Paediatric Ophthalmologist

Responsibilities

• Provide comprehensive assessment, diagnosis, and management of ophthalmic conditions affecting infants, children, and adolescents

• Diagnose and manage congenital and developmental eye disorders

• Assess and manage paediatric strabismus and ocular motility disorders

• Diagnose and manage amblyopia and develop appropriate visual rehabilitation plans

• Assess and manage paediatric refractive errors and visual development abnormalities

• Evaluate children with reduced vision, abnormal visual behaviour, or suspected ocular disease

• Diagnose and manage congenital and paediatric cataracts and other anterior segment conditions

• Assess and manage paediatric glaucoma where appropriate

• Evaluate and manage lacrimal disorders, including congenital nasolacrimal duct obstruction

• Assess and manage ocular manifestations of systemic, neurological, genetic, and metabolic disorders in children

• Provide ophthalmic assessment and ongoing care for premature and high-risk infants where appropriate

• Perform appropriate paediatric ophthalmic diagnostic procedures and investigations

• Perform paediatric ophthalmic surgical procedures within the scope of clinical expertise

• Provide appropriate preoperative assessment, counselling, and postoperative care

• Develop individualized treatment and follow-up plans based on each child’s diagnosis, visual development, and clinical needs

• Provide clear counselling and education to parents and families regarding diagnosis, treatment options, prognosis, and long-term visual care

• Coordinate care with paediatricians, neonatologists, neurologists, geneticists, endocrinologists, orthoptists, optometrists, and other multidisciplinary specialists

• Provide appropriate inpatient consultations and outpatient paediatric ophthalmology services

• Participate in multidisciplinary case discussions and complex patient management

• Maintain accurate and timely clinical documentation

• Participate in clinical governance, patient safety, quality improvement, and departmental development initiatives

• Support teaching, training, and mentoring activities where required

Qualifications

• Board certification or recognised specialist qualification in Ophthalmology with recognised subspecialty training or substantial specialist experience in Paediatric Ophthalmology

• Recognised Tier 1 specialist qualification, including ABMS, Canadian Royal College certification, UK CCT/CCST, European Board, or an equivalent recognised qualification

• Minimum 3–5 years of post-specialisation experience, with significant experience in Paediatric Ophthalmology

• Extensive experience managing a broad range of congenital, developmental, medical, and surgical paediatric eye conditions

• Strong clinical experience in paediatric strabismus, amblyopia, and visual development disorders

• Demonstrated experience in paediatric ophthalmic procedures and surgery

• Strong experience in both inpatient and outpatient paediatric ophthalmology

• Eligibility for Consultant-level licensing with DOH or the relevant UAE healthcare regulatory authority
