Consultant Paediatric Anaesthetist

Responsibilities

• Provide comprehensive anaesthetic care for infants, children, and adolescents undergoing surgical, diagnostic, and interventional procedures

• Conduct thorough pre-anaesthetic assessments and develop individualized perioperative anaesthetic plans

• Administer general, regional, and sedation techniques appropriate for paediatric patients

• Manage complex paediatric airways and provide advanced airway support when required

• Provide anaesthetic care for elective, urgent, and emergency paediatric surgical procedures

• Manage perioperative care for neonates, infants, children, and adolescents with complex medical and surgical conditions

• Provide appropriate intraoperative monitoring and management of paediatric patients

• Recognize and manage perioperative complications and anaesthetic emergencies

• Provide effective postoperative pain management, including multimodal and regional analgesia where appropriate

• Participate in paediatric procedural sedation and anaesthesia outside the operating theatre when required

• Support the perioperative management of critically ill and high-risk paediatric patients

• Coordinate care with paediatric surgeons, intensivists, cardiologists, pulmonologists, emergency physicians, and other multidisciplinary specialists

• Provide appropriate anaesthetic support for paediatric imaging, endoscopy, interventional, and diagnostic procedures

• Maintain accurate and timely clinical documentation

• Participate in clinical governance, patient safety, quality improvement, and departmental development initiatives

• Support teaching, training, simulation, and mentoring activities where required

Qualifications

• Board certification or recognised specialist qualification in Anaesthesiology / Anaesthesia with recognised training or substantial specialist experience in Paediatric Anaesthesia

• Recognised Tier 1 specialist qualification, including ABMS, Canadian Royal College certification, UK CCT/CCST, European Board, or an equivalent recognised qualification

• Minimum 3–5 years of post-specialisation experience, with significant experience in Paediatric Anaesthesia

• Extensive experience providing anaesthetic care for infants, children, and adolescents

• Strong experience managing complex and high-risk paediatric surgical cases

• Demonstrated experience in both elective and emergency paediatric anaesthesia

• DOH Consultant license or eligibility for Consultant-level licensing with the specialty title “Paediatric Anaesthesia”

• Required DOH license title: Paediatric Anaesthesia – Consultant
