Consultant Burns Surgeon

Responsibilities

• Provide comprehensive assessment, diagnosis, and surgical management of burn injuries

• Manage acute, complex, and extensive burn injuries

• Assess burn depth, extent, severity, and associated injuries

• Perform appropriate surgical interventions for burn wound management

• Perform escharotomy, debridement, and excision procedures when clinically indicated

• Perform skin grafting and other reconstructive procedures within the candidate’s area of expertise

• Provide comprehensive wound care and monitor healing and recovery

• Manage burn-related complications, including infection, scarring, and contractures

• Provide pre-operative and post-operative care

• Develop personalised treatment plans based on burn severity and patient needs

• Coordinate care with plastic surgeons, intensivists, anesthesiologists, rehabilitation specialists, and other multidisciplinary teams

• Support nutritional, functional, and psychological aspects of burn recovery

• Provide long-term follow-up and reconstructive planning where required

• Maintain accurate and timely clinical documentation

• Participate in clinical governance, quality improvement, and departmental development initiatives

• Support teaching and training activities where required

Qualifications

• Board certification or recognised specialist qualification in Burns Surgery / Plastic Surgery / General Surgery

• Recognised Tier 1 specialist qualification, including ABMS, Canadian Royal College certification, UK CCT/CCST, European Board, or an equivalent recognised qualification

• Minimum 3–5 years of post-specialisation experience

• Significant clinical experience in Burns Surgery and the management of complex burn injuries

• Strong experience in burn wound management, debridement, excision, and skin grafting

• Experience managing major and extensive burns in a multidisciplinary setting

• Eligibility for Consultant-level licensing with DHA, DOH, or MOHAP

• Additional fellowship, advanced training, or recognised subspecialty experience in Burns Surgery is preferred
